The 49ers lost one of their former special teams captains in the preseason opener when Blake Costanzo suffered an injury that landed him on injured reserve. The team added another linebacker with special teams experience to take Costanzo's place on the roster.

The "Tony Montana Squad" took a big hit Tuesday.

Former special teams ring leader of 2011 - and pre kick-off dance aficionado - Blake Costanzo has been put on injured reserve by the San Francisco 49ers after sustaining an undisclosed injury during the preseason opener Thursday in Baltimore.

Taking his place on the roster is another linebacker with special teams experience, Kion Wilson.

Costanzo, 30, was one of three aging special teams standouts vying for a spot on the 49ers loaded roster. Alongside gunner Kassim Osgood (34) and Bubba Ventrone (31), Costanzo was hoping his play on special teams would transcend the numbers game when it came to final cuts before the regular season opener Sept. 7.

But with a slew of new players added to the roster who are also fighting for spots, it appeared to be a long shot all three special teamers would make the team.

Costanzo had a chance to be in uniform on opening day with fellow inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman likely to be remain on the NFI list for at least the first six weeks of the regular season leaving a spot open on the 53-man roster.

Wilson signed with the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted free agent in 2010. He's made two starts in 15 career games with 11 special-teams tackles on his resume. He will be competing with Nick Moody and Shayne Skov for a spot on the team's crowded roster.
