Harris is in his first year as Stanford's head coach, after spending the last eight at Pittsburgh. The Bay Area native was 52-44 at Pitt, leading the Panthers to bowl games in six of his eight years. Previous to his arrival, Pitt was a Big East doormat with four or fewer wins in five straight seasons. In his last four years, Harris led Pittsburgh to an average of eight wins per year, including nine wins in 2002 and a first ever BCS game in 2004.
Renowned as an offensive guru, Harris has delivered prolific attacks wherever he has coached. The skill positions where he has had the greatest impact are at quarterback and wide receiver. Harris developed two of the last five Biletnikoff Award winners (Antonio Bryant in 2000; Larry Fitzgerald in 2003).
While Stanford is looking for a big offensive turnaround under Harris, his greatest impact in his first year on The Farm has been felt more broadly. He has been praised by his players for bringing a radical change in mental and physical toughness, consistency and work ethic. The transition has been difficult, but the players have "bought in" because of the coach's demonstrated record of success. Harris is a no-nonsense, old-fashioned ball coach, and that is a refreshing change for Stanford Football. |
