Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports that the 49ers have traded Balmer – absent from the team since last week – to the Seahawks for a sixth-round draft pick. The Niners are expected to announce the deal later today.
The trade reunites Balmer with former 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan, who drafted Balmer in the first round in 2008 but is now a senior personnel executive with the Seahawks. Balmer never panned out and was struggling to make the Niners roster this year.
Balmer, 24, was granted a two-day absence from camp last Monday by coach Mike Singletary but did not return as expected on Wednesday. The 49ers then were granted a roster exemption and brought in linebacker Bruce Davis.
Balmer, who expressed dissatisfaction in the past about his role, met with Singletary last Thursday but still did not report. When Singletary was asked if Balmer had asked to return to the team, he said, "If Balmer wanted to be here, he'd be here."
