Quick-hit game notes: Davis leads NFL in TDs

Quick-hit game notes from the 49ers’ 24-21 loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday afternoon.

--- QB Alex Smith connected with TE Vernon Davis on a 29-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, as well as 14-yard and 23-yard touchdown passes in the fourth quarter. It marked Smith’s first touchdown pass since October 28, 2007 vs. New Orleans. Smith now has 22 career touchdown passes. It was Davis’ 4th, 5th and 6th touchdown receptions of the season and his 13th, 14th and 15th of his career.

--- It marked the first time a 49er recorded three touchdown receptions in a single game since Terrell Owens had 9 receptions for 183 yards and 3 TDs at Atlanta (10/14/01).

--- Davis became the first tight end in 49ers history to register three touchdown receptions in one game.

--- Davis now leads the NFL with a career-high six touchdown receptions. He also leads the 49ers this season with 29 receptions for 355 yards.

--- The last time an NFL tight end recorded three touchdown receptions was by Atlanta TE Alge Crumpler vs. Pittsburgh (10/22/06).

--- The last time a 49ers quarterback threw three touchdown passes was J.T. O’Sullivan, who completed 14 of 29 pass attempts for 130 yards, 3 INTs and 3 TDs vs. New England (10/5/08).

--- Davis joins New England WR Randy Moss as the only players to record three touchdown receptions in a single game this season.

--- Davis tied a career-high with seven receptions (7-96-2 TDs at Minnesota – 9/27/09).

--- Smith tied a career-high with three touchdown passes (3 TD passes vs. Oakland – 10/8/06).

--- The last time a 49ers quarterback threw three touchdown passes in one half was QB Jeff Garcia at Arizona (12/7/03) with four touchdown passes in the first half.

--- In his first action since November 12, 2007, at Seattle, Smith completed 15 of 22 pass attempts for 206 yards, three touchdowns, one interception and a quarterback rating of 118.6.

--- WR Michael Crabtree started his first game as a 49er and registered 5 receptions for 56 yards. Four of his receptions went for first downs.

--- LB Manny Lawson sacked QB Matt Schaub in the second quarter. Lawson now has 1.5 sacks on the season and 7.0 career sacks.

--- LB Ahmad Brooks notched his first sack of the season and the third of his career in the fourth quarter. It was his first sack since September 10, 2007, vs. Baltimore.

--- S Dashon Goldson stripped RB Steve Slaton in the third quarter and also recovered the fumble. It marked Goldson’s first career forced fumble and fumble recovery.

--- The 49ers offense registered a season-high 17 first downs. San Francisco produced 247 yards of offense in the second half after being limited to 50 net yards in the first half.

--- WR Isaac Bruce made his 200th career start. OT Tony Pashos made his first start as a 49er at right tackle but was hurt during the game. Coach Mike Singletary said Pashos will undergo a MRI exam to determine the extent of his injury.

--- Linebacker Patrick Willis and defensive end Justin Smith each led the 49ers with a game-high 10 tackles. The pair combined for three stops behind the line of scrimmage and two hits on Houston quarterback Matt Schaub.

--- The 49ers have their first losing streak of the season while dropping to 3-3, which still is their best record after six games since they started 4-2 in 2002.

--- The win gave the Texans a 4-3 record, which ties the team’s best mark through seven games in franchise history. Houston was also 4-3 in 2004.

--- The win gave the Texans their fifth consecutive win at home over an NFC opponent and evened Houston’s record at 1-1 all-time against San Francisco. The 49ers beat the Texans 20-17 in overtime to end the 2005 season in the first meeting between the two teams.

--- Houston outrushed San Francisco, 90 to 59. It was the fourth time this season that the Texans outgained their opponents on the ground. Houston improved to 3-1 in those games. San Francisco’s 59 rushing yards marked the fourth consecutive game in which the Texans allowed fewer than 60 rushing yards.

--- The Houston defense held San Francisco to 297 total yards on offense, which was the third-lowest total of the season. Houston has held its opponents under 300 yards three times this season and is 3-0 in those games. The Texans defense forced the 49ers to go three-and-out on four of their 10 drives (40 percent) in the game.

--- Houston’s 21-point halftime lead tied for the largest in franchise history. Houston led St. Louis 24-3 on 11/27/05. It was the fifth time in team history the Texans shut out an opponent in the first half.

--- Houston held San Francisco to 50 yards in the first half. That is the lowest first-half yardage total allowed in team history, bettering the previous low of 61 yards at Jacksonville on 12/24/04. Houston held San Francisco to 18 first-half rushing yards. That tied for the third-fewest rushing yards given up in the first half in team history, matching the total given up to Baltimore on 12/15/02. The lowest was 11 at the New York Jets on 11/26/06, and second was 13 yards vs. Jacksonville on 10/31/04.

--- Houston held San Francisco to one total yard of offense in the first quarter. That was the third-fewest yards allowed by the Texans in a single quarter.

--- QB Matt Schaub threw two touchdown passes in the first half, upping his season total to a career-high 16. His previous career high was 15 touchdown passes in 2008. Schaub’s 16 touchdown passes this season tied the franchise single-season record set by David Carr in 2004. Schaub threw multiple touchdown passes in a game for the fifth time this season, tying his own club record which he set in 2008. He currently leads the NFL in touchdown pases.

--- DE Mario Williams registered his third sack of the season on San Francisco’s opening play when he tackled QB Shaun Hill for a six-yard loss. Williams upped his franchise-record career sack total to 33.5. DT Jeff Zgonina picked up his second sack of the season when he tackled Hill for a seven-yard loss in the first quarter. Hill has now been sacked 18 times this season, but Smith was not sacked in the second half.
