Willis signs as camp begins

They weren't exactly burning the midnight oil like last year, but then they didn't need to. The 49ers signed first-round draft pick Patrick Willis late Saturday night after players reported to team headquarters in Santa Clara, meaning the entire team will be on the field and ready for Sunday morning's first practice of training camp.

Willis received a five-year deal that reportedly guarantees him $12 million and has a maximum value of $16.7 million. That deal falls in line with the players selected before and after him in the April draft, both of whom signed their contracts earlier this week. Amobi Okoye, the No. 10 overall pick by the Houston Texans, received a six-year deal that voids to five years and will reportedly earn $12.785 million guaranteed as part of a contract that could be worth as much as $17.6 million. Marshawn Lynch, the No. 12 overall pick by Buffalo, signed a five-year deal reportedly worth $18.935 million with $10.285 million guaranteed. Willis, the No. 11 overall selection in April, was the last of San Francisco's nine draft picks to sign his rookie deal. A year ago to the day, it took an all-night negotiating session between the agents for Vernon Davis and 49ers officials to get San Francisco's top draft pick signed before the start of training camp and on the field for the team's first practice last July 28. The 49ers are one of the final NFL teams to begin training camp because they are the last team to play its preseason opener when San Francisco hosts the Denver Broncos on Aug. 13 in a game televised nationally by ESPN. The 49ers hit the field Sunday at 11:15 a.m. for a morning walkthrough, then have a two-hour practice in the afternoon. Their daily regimen of two-a-day practices begins with a two-hour morning session Monday followed by a 90-minute afternoon practice. The Niners will begin training camp with all their draft picks signed for fifth consecutive year.
