Analysis: With the state of the San Francisco offense – and particularly the quarterback position – the 49ers have selected the best prospect in the draft. Smith is very athletic with potentially the brightest mind we have seen at the position in years, so San Francisco has secured the services of a “perfect fit” type quarterback that makes very sound decisions. The addition of Smith will greatly improve the 49ers’ overall depth and athleticism at the quarterback position.

Selecting David Baas from Michigan shows the commitment of the 49ers under the direction of new head coach Mike Nolan. Securing the services of this physically strong and heady player should provide leadership and an ample protector for Alex Smith.

Frank Gore was expected to be the next best thing at the University of Miami. Knee injuries robbed him of significant playing time and health is going to be an ongoing concern. When healthy, Gore displayed a combination of speed, quickness, and power which would rival Ronnie Brown of Auburn. If healthy, Gore could be a find for the 49ers.

Snyder fits into the motto of the new 49ers, which is adding support players to a cast that begins with the selection of Smith. Adding size and depth to the offensive line appears to have been a priority for the team, though this movement did not appear to be a necessity.

Grade: B+
