Eight rookies added to injury lists

With training camp under a week away, the 49ers placed eight rookies on active injury lists. All are eligible to return at any point.

Eight San Francisco 49ers rookies will start training camp on injury lists, the team announced Thursday.

Marcus Lattimore, Bruce Ellington, Keith Reaser, Brandon Thomas, Marcus Martin and Trey Millard will be placed on the active non-football injury list (NFI). Aaron Lynch and Kaleb Ramsey will be placed on the active physically unable to perform list (PUP).

It appears Lattimore - still technically a rookie after sitting out all of last season - will start of camp slowly while he continues to rehab from his gruesome knee injury suffered while playing collegiately at South Carolina. He was an active participant in the team’s offseason program, but suffered a hamstring injury during the voluntary sessions in May. He showed progress during mandatory minicamp last month, but the team will remain cautious while he continues to work back from the injury.

The news is not surprising for Reaser, Thomas and Millard. All three were drafted in May under the assumption they would “red shirt” their first seasons after sustaining ACL injuries in college. Martin and Ellington’s injuries are currently unknown. Both players participated fully in the team’s offseason program.

Ramsey suffered a myriad of leg and hip injuries at Boston College before being taken by the 49ers in the seventh round. At the time, Trent Baalke said the team had evaluated him in three straight drafts, but injuries prevented him from leaving school before this year.

Aaron Lynch suffered a hamstring strain early in the offseason program and didn’t participate in the mandatory minicamp sessions open to the media.

All players remain on the active 90-man roster and are eligible to return at any time. Should any of the players be placed on the inactive list, their spot on the roster would open and they wouldn’t be eligible to return to the field until Week 7 of the regular season.
