Report: Jets interested in QB Josh McCown

Add Josh McCown's name to the list of potential Jets quarterbacks heading into the 2014 NFL regular season.

With the NFL Scouting Combine underway and free agency set to begin March 1, it appears as if the New York Jets are open to bringing in a veteran quarterback not named Mark Sanchez to compete with rookie Geno Smith. According to NFL media reports, Gang Green has its sights set on free agent quarterback Josh McCown, who had a breakout year in 2013 with the Chicago Bears. The 34-year-old veteran tossed 13 touchdowns and just one interception filling in for an injured Jay Cutler during a five game span when the team went 3-2.

While McCown may not be the long-term answer under center for the Jets, he could serve as a stopgap to give Smith time to develop and grow into the starter's role.

Rex Ryan has been supportive of his young gunslinger, but is not as enamored with him as he was with Mark Sanchez just a season ago.

"What our overall situation is, let's see what happens, how it plays out in the end.," mentioned Ryan at the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. "Certainly with Geno, the way he finished, he had some rough spots, but I like the way he finished."

As the New York Jets quarterback carousel keeps on turning, expect Ryan and company to scour the draft and free agent market in search of a franchise signal-caller in case the Geno Smith experiment fails.
