A day after the 49ers cut their roster down to 53, players the team hoped to sign to the practice squad did not pass through waivers and landed elsewhere.

As the San Francisco 49ers tried to put together an eight-man practice squad Sunday, they lost out on a few talented players they had in training camp.

Seventh-round pick Marcus Cooper did not pass through waivers and will join the Kansas City Chiefs' 53-man roster, the Sacramento Bee reported. The same for tight end MarQueis Gray, who is headed to Cleveland, according to CSN Bay Area. Both players were candidates for the team's practice squad.

Wide receivers Chad Hall (Chiefs' 53-man roster) and Ricardo Lockette (Bears' practice squad) were also picked up Sunday, according to multiple reports.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported the team intends to sign speedy corner Darryl Morris and tackle Carter Bykowski to the practice squad.

Morris only played in 27 snaps this preseason and was competing with Cooper for a spot on the practice squad. Generously listed at 5'10", Morris had a good camp and was one of the fastest players on the team.

Bykowski is entering just his third season as an offensive lineman after joining Iowa State as a tight end. He is still very raw and needs to get stronger, but the 49ers envision him as a swing tackle down the road.

The Bee also reported wideout Chuck Jacobs will be signed to San Francisco's practice squad. Jacobs caught two touchdown passes this preseason.

Running back Jewel Hampton will be the fourth player added to the 49ers' practice squad, according to the Sacramento Bee.

Hampton led the team with 37 preseason rushes for 113 yards and a score.

---------------

Offensive lineman Patrick Omameh will also be added, the Bee reported. Originally a guard at Michigan, the undrafted free agent played right tackle for the 49ers in the preseason.

Omameh got off to a rough start in the first exhibition game against the Broncos, but grew increasingly comfortable at right tackle and had his best game in the preseason finale in San Diego.

---------------

Former 49ers quarterback Scott Tolzien joined the Green Bay Packers' practice squad, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Tolzien was a casualty of the first round of cuts and struggled in two preseason games. He completed 18 of 34 passes for no touchdowns with an interception. His passer rating was 57.0.

San Francisco originally acquired Tolzien off waivers from the San Diego Chargers prior to the 2011 season and kept him inactive the entire year. He beat out Josh Johnson for the third quarterback job in 2012 and was active in just three games. The emergence of B.J. Daniels this summer made Tolzien expendable.

---------------

The sixth and seventh spots on the practice squad went to defensive lineman Mike Purcell and defensive back Michael Thomas, according to the Bee and CSN Bay Area.

Purcell had a strong training camp but couldn't beat out the more experienced Demarcus Dobbs, Will Tukuafu and Tony Jerod-Eddie for roster spots. The undrafted rookie out of Wyoming might remain on the bubble with Jerod-Eddie replacing Dobbs (suspended) for the first week season.

Thomas, traditionally a safety, also spent time at nickel corner behind Carlos Rogers and Perrish Cox. He spent 2012 on the 49ers' practice squad after going undrafted out of Stanford.
