The 49ers have signed free-agent corner Eric Wright, the team announced before its preseason opener Thursday. He joins a secondary looking to replace Chris Culliver who is likely out for the season after tearing his ACL in the first week of training camp.

For the second time this summer, the 49ers have acquired cornerback Eric Wright.

Wright's former team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, originally traded Wright to San Francisco on July 19. But he subsequently failed his physical with the the 49ers and his rights were sent back the Buccs, who then released him.

Now, instead of sending a conditional 2014 draft pick to Tampa Bay, San Francisco acquired Wright as a free agent and signed him to a one-year deal.

“We are pleased to welcome Eric to the 49ers organization and look forward to his contributions,” general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement.

“Eric is currently tending to a personal matter and he will join the team as soon as possible.”

After the initial trade was nullified, Baalke said Wright's failed physical had nothing to do with any recent run ins with that law, including a possible DUI charge after being arrested in Los Angeles early last month, according to reports.

Wright will be placed on the non-football injury list and won't participate in practice until fully healthy. While on the list, he counts against the 90-man roster limit for training camp. Once the team cuts the roster down to 53 players for the regular season, Wright can remain on the NFI list and not count against the roster, but he would be ineligible to play for the first six weeks of the season.

The 49ers cornerback situation took a dramatic turn since the initial trade when the team lost Chris Culliver to a torn ACL. Wright will compete directly with Tramaine Brock and Nnamdi Asomugha to to fill the void Culliver left behind. Perish Cox and Marcus Cooper are also in the mix.

Wright reportedly dealt with an Achilles injury with the Buccaneers last season and was also suspended for four games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances. He later admitted to using Adderall.

To make room on the roster, the team waived undrafted free agent Lowell Rose, who was waived and resigned when the initial trade was made in July.

Originally taken in the second round (53rd overall) in 2007 out of UNLV by the Browns, Wright originally attended USC after going to Riordan High school in San Francisco.

Wright played in 73.4 percent of Tampa Bay's snaps last season through Week 11. His best season came in 2011 with Detroit when he tied a career high with four interceptions and 17 pass breakups. He also set a career-mark with 71 tackles.
