The 49ers are taking a chance on perhaps the most talented running back in the draft, who is coming off a knee injury that nearly ended his football career.

Had Marcus Lattimore finished his junior season healthy, there's a solid chance he would have been taken in the first or second round of the draft.

But in an October game against Tennessee, Lattimore tore three knee ligaments leading to a dislocation that had some believing he would never play again. He tore the ACL in his other knee a year before.

When healthy, Lattimore was a true bell cow with a well-rounded game. He compares very favorably to Frank Gore, who also suffered major knee injuries in college, and will have plenty of time to rehab his knee given the 49ers' already-crowded backfield.

In his three years, Lattimore rushed for 2,677 and 38 touchdowns. He averaged 4.8 yards per carry and also made 74 receptions for 767 yards.

The team used its compensatory selection (No. 131 overall) to take Lattimore.
