The Chicago Bears came out of Sunday’s contest against the Minnesota Vikings battered and bruised. Five Bears players were knocked out of that game and only one of them, RB Matt Forte, participated in practice, albeit limited, today.
I watched Forte, who was in full pads, run through positional drills for 10 minutes today. He was not limping at all and did not show any ill effects from the ankle injury he suffered last week.
“Matt Forte was able to do a little bit, some individual drills,” said Lovie Smith. “But it was definitely on a limited basis for him.”
Yet the good news ends with Forte. Chicago players who did not practice today: WR Devin Hester (concussion), G Chris Spencer (knee), CB Charles Tillman (foot), LB Lance Briggs (foot), WR Alshon Jeffery (knee) and TE Kellen Davis (ankle).
Hester was the only player who was not present at practice. As with all NFL players who suffer concussions, Hester will have to clear a number of neurological tests this week from an independent physician before cleared to play.
Charles Tillman has received the second-most votes for NFC cornerbacks in fan Pro Bowl – behind only his teammate Tim Jennings. It has been reported that Tillman has a cracked bone in his foot, although it’s not considered serious.
Briggs was placed in a walking boot following the Vikings contest, although that was done purely as a precaution. He strolled into the media room this afternoon faking a limp but then smiled and resumed walking normally. He’s not expected to miss this week’s contest.
Spencer’s knee injury is considered the most worrisome of the group. It’s unlikely he’ll play this week, with Edwin Williams taking his starting spot at left guard.
Davis has dealt with back and ankle injuries all year but has yet to miss a game. I would be surprised if he’s not out there this Sunday when Chicago takes on the Seattle Seahawks.
Jeffery is recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery and will be out one to three more weeks.
