The Vikings did what most expected, making Adrian Peterson active and declaring him a starter for Sunday’s regular-season opener, a little more than eight months after surgery to repair the ACL and MCL in his left knee.
Adrian Peterson is active and will start for the Minnesota Vikings, ending more than eight months of speculation whether he would be ready for the team’s regular-season opener.
Peterson was listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report. He tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee Dec. 24 and had surgery to repair them Dec. 30.
He began training camp on the physically unable to perform list after tearing his anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments on Dec. 24 and had surgery on Dec. 30. He slowly worked his way into a practice routine that started on Aug. 12, but coaches didn’t allow him to start taking contact in practice until Aug. 27.
Peterson said Thursday he is ready to play, and the best indication that he would came from offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave, who also said Thursday there is “not too much doubt” that Peterson is ready.
Musgrave also said the coaching staff had a set number of plays in mind for Peterson. He had been getting 25 to 35 carries in practices this week, the same as his replacement, Toby Gerhart. But head coach Leslie Frazier and Musgrave both said they can’t be influenced to play him more than they plan if he looks explosive in early action Sunday.
“That’s part of our responsibility to be able to keep our emotions in check and put his safety first and foremost and allow the process to work its way,” Musgrave said.
The inactive players for the Vikings are QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson, CB A.J. Jefferson, WR Jarius Wright, S Andrew Sendejo, LB Marvin Mitchell, LB Audie Cole and G Mark Asper.
For the Jaguars, OL Josh Beekman, CB Derek Cox, DE Austen Lane, DT Jeris Pendleton, WR Brian Robiskie, DE George Selvie and LB Daryl Smith are all inactive. Smith has an abdomen injury and is the biggest blow as a starting defender.
