Patriots release WR Ochocinco

The Jets offseason has been a wild and crazy ride. Things could get even stranger if New York makes a run at free agent Chad Ochocinco.

According to multiple league sources, the New England Patriots have parted ways with 11-year veteran wideout Chad Ochocinco. The talented receiver failed to grasp the nuances of the Patriots playbook and tallied just 15 receptions in 15 games played in 2011.

The Patriots added wide receivers Donte Stallworth, Brandon Lloyd, Jabar Gaffney and Anthony Gonzalez in free agency while placing a franchise tender on their speedster Wes Welker.

Amid trade speculation over the past week, New England could not find a suitor for Ochocinco following the worst statistical year of his career.

With No. 85 out on the open market for the taking, the question becomes could he land with the Jets in 2012?

Not very likely.

New York traded up to draft Stephen Hill in the second-round of April's draft and he is slated as the No. 2 wide receiver on the Jets depth chart. While it doesn't appear that Gang Green is chomping at the bit to sweep in and snag Ochocinco, stranger things have happened.

Last offseason period, Rex Ryan expressed his admiration for Ochocinco's playmaking ability, but Gang Green ultimately elected to sign Plaxico Burress.

There's little doubt that New York is an improbable destination for Ochocinco, yet the same was said about free agent quarterback Tim Tebow in the week leading up to his trade to Gang Green.
