Although the San Francisco 49ers' signing of kicker Jeff Reed this week initially looked like a one-game stopgap, it's possible that Reed might stick around for the rest of the season.
According to the San Jose Mercury News, the 49ers acknowledged that Joe Nedney suffered a setback this week in his recovery from a right knee injury. Reed had earlier told reporters that he was informed by the team he would be around for the rest of the season.
Nedney has not been put on injured reserve, although Trent Baalke, the team's vice president of player personnel, said it "doesn't look good" for a return this season, the Mercury News said.
Nedney suffered a sprain and contusion to his plant leg on Nov. 14 and will miss his third consecutive game Sunday when the 49ers meet the Green Bay Packers.
Reed, who won two Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers, was released by the team Nov. 16 after going 15 for 22 on his field goal attempts.
