With Joe Nedney still nursing a strained right knee, the 49ers signed their third kicker this season: Jeff Reed, who was cut last month by the Pittsburgh Steelers after an uncharacteristically poor start.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – All indications this week were that kicker Joe Nedney would be ready Sunday when the San Francisco 49ers play the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. But the 49ers on Thursday signed veteran Jeff Reed, who was released last month by the Pittsburgh Steelers after missing seven of 22 field goal attempts.

The 49ers seemed so sure Nedney would be OK that they cut Shane Andrus earlier this week. Andrus was in uniform for two games but missed a 47-yarder last Monday night against the Arizona Cardinals and had another attempt blocked. He later made two field goals from 38 and 26 yards.

Nedney has been out since Nov. 14 because of right knee strain and bone bruise in his plant leg.

Reed, 31, won two Super Bowl rings with the Steelers and was 27 of 31 last season but never found a rhythm this year. He was cut Nov. 16 after missing a 26-yarder in a 39-26 loss to the New England Patriots two days earlier.

Reed, however, is one of the most accurate kickers in NFL history, making 204 of 249 field goals, 81.9 percent.

INJURY UPDATE: The following players did not take part in practice Thursday because of injuries: center David Baas (concussion), linebacker Parys Haralson (ankle), cornerback Will James (concussion), Nedney (right knee), cornerback Shawntae Spencer (quadricep) and running back Brian Westbrook (ankle). Wide receiver Josh Morgan (shoulder) had limited availability.
