The 49ers announce a new deal for their tight end, who signs a $37-million contract that will guarantee him $23 million.

San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis, considered one of the best players at his position in the league, is now the highest-paid tight end in league history.

Davis signed a five-year extension through the 2015 season, the team announced Saturday. Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area reported the deal was for $37 million, with $23 million guaranteed.

Davis, 26, was named one of six team captains this week by 49ers coach Mike Singletary. He had a breakout season in 2009, totaling 78 receptions for 965 yards and 13 touchdowns, tying the league mark for TDs by a tight end.

The 49ers, who open their season Sunday in Seattle, have now locked up two of their most valuable players. In May, linebacker Patrick Willis signed a $50-million, five-yard extension that guarantees him $29 million.
